The belief that ringing ears mean someone is talking about you has roots in Pliny’s “Natural History” encyclopedia, written more than 2000 years ago. Pliny, Gains Plinius Secundus, was an ancient Roman author and natural philosopher. Born in Como, Italy to a Roman knight, Pliny was a highly prevalent researcher, writer, and author. In his days, he authored more than 75 books. Throughout the course of his writings, Pliny mentions several old wives’ tales. None of which are true. Ringing ears is one of these.

Some superstitions say small ears are marks of stinginess. Others say small ears denote a delicate character.

Thick ears a person of a sensual/coarse nature.

Large ears signify generosity. 

The larger the earlobes the greater the intellect.

Long or prominent ears: a person with musical inclinations.

Small ears set tight to the head indicate a mean, roguish disposition.

If the ear is thin and angular, the owner is bad-tempered and cruel.

If the ear is long and hangs down, the possessor will have a long life.

If you can see the sunshine through a man’s ears, he is a rascal.
